In the last years, hydrogen has been considered as a promising energy vector for the oncoming modification of the current energy sector, mainly based on fossil fuels. Hydrogen can be produced from water with no significant pollutant emissions but in the nearest future its production from different hydrocarbon raw materials by thermochemical processes seems to be more feasible. In any case, a mixture of gaseous compounds containing hydrogen is produced, so a further purification step is needed to purify the hydrogen up to required levels accordingly to the final application, i.e., PEM fuel cells. In this mean, membrane technology is one of the available separation options, providing an efficient solution at reasonable cost. Particularly, dense palladium-based membranes have been proposed as...

Membranes are becoming a competitive technology compared to the conventional separation unit operations, e.g., cryogenic distillation, chemical and physical absorption. Membrane gas separation has played an important role in various environmental and energy processes, such as CO2 capture, VOC recovery, natural gas sweetening, biogas upgrading, hydrogen production during the last two decades, and can potentially compete with some traditional separation methods in terms of energy requirements and economic costs. Different types of membrane materials such as common polymers, microporous organic polymers (MOPs), fixed-site-carrier (FSC) membranes, mixed matrix membranes (MMMs), carbon molecular sieve membranes (CMSMs), as well as inorganic (ceramic, metallic, zeolites) membranes, have been rep...

Within the membrane community there has been an increasing focus on the filtration technique forward osmosis (FO), where filtration is driven by a concentration gradient as opposed to the traditional pressure gradient known from reverse osmosis (RO). FO membranes have gained interest in several disciplines and are finding applications in different markets such as seawater and brackish water desalination, wastewater treatment, treatment of high salinity waters, fertigation, textile industry, dairy, food, and beverage, power generation, and pharma industry. One of the key performance indicators for FO membranes is the rejection of organic molecules. In drinking water or wastewater treatment, high rejection is important to ensure that micropollutants such as pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and en...

Fabrication of 3C-Silicon Carbide Membranes: Towards Development of Novel Microdevices for Biomedical ApplicationsMicroelectromechanical (MEMS) devices with high biocompatibility are the ideal medical solution to many types of human disease prevention and detection system. The best condition for human physiological measurements is to avoid disruption of patient’s normal activity and this can be achieved by implantable biomedical microdevices. Conceptually, BioMEMS technology offer prospective devices with low power consumption, low production cost and miniaturization of size and weights for implants and continuous patient monitoring. However, apart from electronic design and fabrication issues, the material chosen for the device should be biocompatible and easy to adapt to traditional micr...
